WHAT IT'S USED FOR:
Just as every institution will recognise and use specific accession number formats, every format can itself include specific delimiters between segments. There are several commonly used delimiters, such as - and /, but you can enter many characters (or set of characters) as delimiters.
Here are some examples of segment delimiters in use within accession numbers:
'1998/12/1', where the '/' signifies a change between the year segment and the sequence, and again between the sequence and the sub-sequence;
'FA.1998.123', where the dot separates the Collection code ('FA') from the year, and the year from the sequence number.
There is no need to insert a delimiter between alpha and numeric segments unless any of the segments in the format are a mixture of alpha and numeric characters. See Alphanumeric segments for more information on configuring accession number formats containing this type of segment.
Note that the Segment delimiters you use should be different from the character(s) you use as Range delimiters. This makes the format easier to use and allows for much more precise searching on accession numbers.
