Who accesses things in Vernon CMS is controlled by Users and Groups.

Users are the user names that people use to log into Vernon CMS.

Groups are collections of Users with the same permissions.

What Users and Groups can access is controlled by Datafile and Process Security.

Datafile Security controls who can create, delete, view or modify records (e.g. Object records).

Process Security controls the users actions. For example, logging into Vernon CMS, Tool bar buttons, or opening Windows or Menu items.

Inheritance

When planning your security, your Groups may form a hierarchy. A Group will inherit any rights that the Group below has. So if you allow Public users to view records, the next Group up, Cataloguers, can view records automatically. By creating a hierarchy, you only have to add additional rights to each higher Group, rather than having to assign the full security to every level.

When you are setting up your security, or editing an existing setup, be aware of any relationships your Group has. A Group may not appear to have rights to edit a datafile or process but because of inheritance it does. This can happen if a subordinate Group has been allowed access to that datafile. Then the higher Group will inherit the rights of the Group below and can access anything the lower Group can.
