Thesaural relationships are relationships or linkages between terms.

Related Term

A related term is a term that is associated with or related to another term.

A related term is different from a Use Instead term in that it is related to but not a replacement for the original term.

Latin America would be a related term for both Central America and for South America, but not a Use Instead term as it refers only to the Spanish speaking countries of those two regions.

Use Instead

A Use Instead term is a term that is used instead of another term.

For example, The Netherlands could be a Use Instead term for Holland. Purse could be a Use Instead term for handbag.

Used For

A Used For term is the term that this term is used instead of.

Guide Terms

The ‘Guide terms’ are terms that guide you through the hierarchy. Some published thesauri contain Guide Terms.

The system will display guide terms in Authority Options with the guide term display name prefaced with the character specified.

You can turn on guide terms by going to Tools > System Maintenance > Customised Configuration > Authority tab, then check the Display Guide Terms in Hierarchical Displays checkbox.

Translation

Use the Translation field to record terms that are a translation of the current term.
